FAQ
What level of improv experience is required to attend?
None! We welcome participants of all experience levels. This retreat uses improv as a tool for wellness, and is neither geared toward improv mastery nor is it a substitute for an intro class.
Do I have to be funny?
Nope! In fact, we ask that you leave ego and cleverness at home. The best improv comes from realness and honesty. We want you to connect with your true self and realize that you have everything you need, you are enough, and your ideas are AWESOME! Laughter is a happy side effect of truth.
Will I have to perform in front of people?
The improv exercises we use will be group-focused, team-building, and confidence-boosting. There will not be a stage performance element. Teaching you how to perform on stage is not a goal; teaching you how to stop performing in life is. :-)
How will this weekend benefit my life?
At the very least, this is a weekend where we hope you will feel rested, renewed, and ready to take on what life has to offer. The improv and mindfulness exercises will help us all practice being present and playful.
Unscripted events are safe spaces. What does that mean?
Safe space means that all are welcome and affirmed, regardless of age, race, ethnicity, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, economic status, or physical ability. Harassment and discrimination of any kind are not tolerated. We are here to encourage, uplift, and empower all individuals who participate in our programs.
Can you accommodate food allergies/dietary restrictions/vegetarian/vegan needs?
Yes! The YMCA Outdoor Center can accommodate any food restrictions, just let us know what you need when you register and we’ll make sure you are taken care of.
What are lodging accommodations like?
We’ll be staying in climate-controlled yurts with a central bath house/meeting room area. All yurts have 6 bunk beds (12 bunks) with mattresses. Yurts will be separated by self-identified gender.
Is this retreat for adults only?
Yes! Participants must be 21 years of age or older. It’s play time for the grown-ups. :-)
Alcohol is being served? So...can I just get drunk before I have to do improv stuff?
Beer and wine will be served with dinner Friday and with after dinner activities Saturday. Sometimes it’s nice to wind down with an adult beverage. That said, we also want to create a safe space where everyone is able to play at the top of their abilities, get the most out of the retreat, and respect our friends present who may choose not to imbibe. We ask that participants drink responsibly.
